As the nights draw in and winter approaches, we see an explosion of period dramas on TV. Especially on a Sunday evening – am I right? Yes, here’s nothing quite like a cute guy in some breeches to cure the Sunday evening blues. None of us can get out of going to work on Monday morning, but with period dramas we can escape to another world for an hour or two.
However, now there’s almost too many TV channels and on-demand subscription services meaning we have literally hundreds of period dramas to chose from when we’re looking for a flight of fancy. How do we know what programmes are actually any good? That’s where I come in with this really handy post on my best period drama blogs to follow for all the latest news on period dramas.
But before I dive in, don’t forget there is always this blog – the Hisdoryan blog! I regularly post period drama content, including the latest shows you should be watching – and you NEED to check out my period drama guide. Its the only place on the internet you can find the latest up-to-date period drama releases in the UK on one single, easy-to-use web page!
Period Dramas Blog No.1 – The Lady and the Rose
I’ve been following The Lady and the Rose for a good few years now. This blog has been my trusty go-to source for period dramas, and it has never let me down. There is a page dedicated to period dramas (both film and TV) for the upcoming year, broken down by month and including international air dates. There are also pages featuring extensive lists of period dramas broken down by historical period. Follow The Lady and the Rose Twitter feed – V handily pins the top upcoming period dramas for the month at the top of her feed.
Period Dramas Blog No.2 – Frock Flicks
From the moment you read Frock Flick’s tagline – ‘bitchy is our brand’ – you know you are in for a hilarious and somewhat snarky look at historical costumes in period dramas. I love this blog as it blends historical facts and caustic commentary in such an entertaining way. The Upcoming News section is a great place to keep an eye on what period dramas are due out next, but I equally adore their regular features such as Man Crush Monday and Top 5 Friday. The variety of articles on historical costumes in films is simply insane! There’s also a podcast which (shame on me) I haven’t got around to listening to yet.
Period Dramas Blog No.3 – Willow and Thatch
Willow and Thatch is a period dramas blog focusing mainly on the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras. TOn the blog you will find a master list of historical films broken down by era, as well as a great variety of period drama articles. They also host monthly period drama book discussions via their Facebook group. I always love to read the book before the film, so if you’re like me, I thoroughly recommend you join in. Also sign up for their newsletter which will help keep you on top of what period dramas are due out next.
